Microsoft is aware that Minecraft can inspire kids to learn programming, and it's banking on that strategy this year. The Minecraft Hour of Code Designer tutorial teaches children 6 years older to make a simple game. It was created by Microsoft and Code.org. The Designer uses a drag-and-drop interface to show familiar concepts of code, like loops and object-oriented programming while letting your imagination play around in Minecraft's amorphous world. You can create chickens that drop gold, and other rules that are as logical or ludicrous as you'd like.
The tutorial is available right now in 10 languages and will be available in 50 languages when Computer Science Education Week kicks off on December 5th. It's not as easy as picking up programming languages, of course.
