How to Play Classic Doom With Amazing Ray Tracing Effects

The original 1993 Doom, the progenitor of more than three decades of shooters is still very much alive and kicking. The game has been portable to nearly every platform imaginable but it's much more than just a meme. Community mods like Brutal Doom, that have access to the source code of the classic game, have helped keep the original game relevant well after it was overtaken by newer games. The latest update to the beloved shooter is adding the latest ray tracing lighting techniques.

This isn't the first time we've seen high-tech lighting paired with low-tech visuals. The well-knownly bloated Minecraft has official Nvidia-branded RTX support and Nvidia has rebuilt Quake II to show what full-blown path tracing could look like. Minecraft Servers However, the Doom mod is available for free to everyone PC player. It's especially dramatic in Doom's sci-fi settings which is which is a Martian colony populated by hordes of ravenous monsters. Realistically rendered shadows and reflections of plasma ammunition, fireballs and lava pools showcase just how lighting can be done with good lighting, even for Doom's incredibly basic polygon environments and sprite enemy.

You can see those effects in action in the video from PCWorld's YouTube channel below along with an explainer of how you can enable the mod and play Doom with the gorgeous lighting yourself.

The PrBoom mod comes from programmer Sultim Tsyrendashiev. He's baked in support for Nvidia DLSS and other well-known tweaks, like an always-available in-game flashlight. You'll still require a beefy PC to run the mod at its peak, though DLSS can help ease the load. You can still play the first three episodes of Doom. However you might have to open the settings file to ensure the best performance. You can download the mod files and the source code from Github.
