'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over an year after introducing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week that it will end the game later this year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30th 2021 to play the augmented reality title. It's not available for download on app marketplaces and is not available to download.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus pandemic, and the changes to daily life that it's brought. "Minecraft Earth was created around free movement and collaborative play which have become near impossible in the current climate," the studio said. Like Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had tweaked the game to make it easier to play at home. Those changes clearly weren't enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) on January 5, 2021. However, there's some good news in the news of today: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in a stylish manner. Mojang is rolling out one last update for the game it says contains changes "to ensure that your time on Minecraft Earth enjoyable as possible." In addition to other improvements that the update removes with real-money transactions and drastically reduces the amount of time it will take players to create and create things in the game. It also gives players a chance to see all the content that Mojang was working on before today's announcement. "We hope that these changes will allow players to explore, create and build more - while staying safe indoors," the studio said.



After June 30th comes and goes, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. If you've spent money on Minecraft Earth at any point during the course of the game, you'll be given tokens that allow you to download the Bedrock edition of Minecraft on your mobile device. For Microsoft, this is without a doubt a disappointing end to Minecraft Earth. When we first the game in action at WWDC 2019, it was clear that Microsoft was optimistic about the game. It's not a good sign for consumer AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to survive the pandemic with all of Microsoft’s resources.



Mojang has stated that they're forever thankful for the extraordinary talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy choice. We're doing everything to ensure that you get the most enjoyment from Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
