Dundee students design city waterfront with Minecraft
5 June 2015
Dundee school pupils have submitted their ideas for the future of the city's waterfront using the game Minecraft.
Minecraft
Primary pupils have spent several months playing the cult video game to develop plans for the area, which is currently undergoing an PS1bn-related revitalization.
The project was supervised by Dundee City Council and the University of Dundee.
The design was taken into consideration and so was the support for tourism education and job creation.
In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp which involves primary 6 and seven students from across the city, students from nine secondary schools have been taking part in similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.
Pupils worked in groups using XBox and Playstation consoles with the game. They also connected to whiteboards in classrooms, developing their visions and reimagining them of the city's waterfront.
'Hugely enthusiastic'
Derek Robertson of Dundee University's school of education said that the game was an "huge phenomenon" that enticed children.
He said that "We must understand the online spaces that children are using and how they affect their learning."
"Games and applications such as these can be a fantastic method of engaging children in topics like design and the environment.
"The children we have been working with over the past few months have been hugely enthusiastic and have created amazing work. Some of it might be an obstacle for city planners but of course that's the great thing about Minecraft that they can make anything."
Mr Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from around the globe to participate in a Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles to discuss ways in which Minecraft can be best employed in both informal and formal learning.
