After Minecraft Says no to NFTs, NFT Worlds Vows to Create its own Game

Mojang made waves yesterday by stating, in no uncertain phrases, that NFTs are not welcome in Minecraft (opens in new tab). This is a good thing for players, but not for those who have already made a commitment to using blockchain technology in games like NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds is a customizable, decentralized, community driven play-to-earn gaming platform where world owners can create their own limitless metaverse games, experiences for players or exclusive communities within their worlds," its website (opens in a new tab) says.

"Currently using Minecraft and its sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the backbone of a decades worth of open-source development within the Minecraft community. Some forums It dramatically expands on it to create an entirely new types of 3D game based on voxels, which is decentralized metaverses backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What that means, basically is that it can support custom Minecraft servers that allow players to purchase virtual land parcels and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency. It's the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy appears specifically designed to shut down. And it definitely had an impact: The price of $WRLD (opens in a new tab) was soaring after the announcement by the studio.

In response to Mojang's latest policy, NFT Worlds has issued an official statement (opens in a new tab) in which it denounces Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for creators, builders, and players," and vowing to make its own game to take over the game.

"We're creating a brand-new platform and game based on the basic mechanics of Minecraft however, with the advancement of technology and active development Minecraft has been absent for a long time," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a rewrite of some open source Minecraft replica, which would violate the EULA or still risk legal action, this is a complete rewrite made from scratch. The public will also be able to see a brand identity change that is more friendly to players as part of the transition.

The game will feature a "playstyle as well as a look and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said however it will have performance optimizations, graphic enhancements and new gameplay that will provide "a more affordable, accessible and enjoyable gaming experience." It will be free for all players and "completely untethered from the policy enforcement Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." At the same time it will be backwards compatible with existing Minecraft server plugins, so when the time comes to change platforms creators of content will be capable of making the switch with minimal fuss and muss.

Making an improved Minecraft than Minecraft (while maintaining compatibility with Minecraft) is an awfully huge undertaking, and one that could trigger immediate and intense examination from Microsoft but NFT Worlds doesn't have many options. Mojang has effectively shut the door on its business model, but a complete switch to a brand new game would leave existing users, and everything they've built so far, in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels moving is to develop something that functions like Minecraft but not actually Minecraft. This is a challenging task.

NFT Worlds stated that it will make changes to its launcher and play pages to draw new players who aren't interested to the cryptocurrency angle. It also laid out some importantstakes, with high stakes for NFT Worlds' future as it fights for both the technological and philosophical spirit of the internet.

"Microsoft has declared that they will always act in the best interests of their shareholders and balance sheet but at the expense of innovation, user experience and creators," NFT Worlds said. "We believe that an open, free, and a more evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world will create the best option for developers, creators, and ultimately gamers.

"We are fighting for a future in which every participant is benefited by the ecosystem's contributions. This is a big task.

I have contacted Microsoft to ask their opinion regarding the NFT Worlds plan. I will update this post if I get a response.
