Minecraft is a plethora of useful applications, many of which teach players. It is also a great tool to make the computers that use to play Minecraft more intelligent. This is what Microsoft's Project Malmo (formerly known as DNA Storage Project) is currently working on. Project Malmo, which was publicly revealed today on the Mojang blog has made its open-source tools available to all today to assist others in strengthening AI in various ways.
Mojang says Minecraft is the best method to teach AI in order to solve problems, sharpen spatial and temporal reasoning and also to foster collaboration. Project Malmo provides a variety of opportunities to teach AI software and can also be utilized as an experimental tool to test these theories.
If you're interested to see what Project Malmo has to offer in addition to testing it yourself, you can download the mod for the PC/Mac edition of Minecraft here. Although you will need to be familiar with some programming but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be concerned. Microsoft has confirmed that even beginners are able to join in and are eager to see what everyone creates.
