After Minecraft Says no to NFTs, NFT Worlds Pledges to Create its Own Game

Mojang was in the news yesterday by stating, in no uncertain phrases, that NFTs are not welcome in Minecraft (opens in new tab). This is a good thing for gamers , but not so for those who have already committed to using blockchain technology in games-like NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds," a completely decentralized, completely customizable and community driven, play-to-ear gaming platform where world owners can create limitless metaverse experiences or games for players or communities within the worlds that they own," its website (opens new tab).

"Currently using Minecraft and its sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of a decade's worth of open source development within the Minecraft community and radically expands on it to enable completely new kinds of 3D game based on voxels, which is decentralized metaverses that are backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What that means, basically is that it allows custom Minecraft servers that allow players to purchase plots of virtual land and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency-the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's policy on blockchain seems specifically aimed at removing. And it definitely had an impact the price of $WRLD (opens in new tab) plunged immediately after the announcement by the studio.

In response to Mojang's recent policy, NFT Worlds has issued a statement (opens in a new tab) decrying Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for builders, creators, and players," and vowing to make its own game to replace it.

"We're creating a new game and platform based on many of the core mechanics of Minecraft, but with the advancement of technology and ongoing development Minecraft has been absent for a long time," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a rewrite of an open source Minecraft version, which could infringe the EULA or still risk legal action, this is completely built from scratch. The transition will also be accompanied by a public-facing brand identity change that is more user-friendly."

The new game will have an "playstyle, look, and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said however, it will include performance optimizations, graphics enhancements and new gameplay that will offer "a more accessible, affordable and enjoyable experience." It will be free for all players, and "completely free of the policies that Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." At the same time, it will also be backwards compatible with existing Minecraft server plugins, so when it is time to change platforms creators of content will be in a position to move with minimal fuss and muss.

Making an improved Minecraft than Minecraft (while maintaining compatibility with Minecraft) is a huge undertaking, and one that would invite some immediate and thorough investigation from Microsoft, but NFT Worlds doesn't have many alternatives. Mojang has effectively closed the door to its business model, but a wholesale change to a different game would leave the existing users and everything they've built so far, in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels moving is to come up with something that functions like Minecraft but not actually Minecraft. It's a big task.

In the near future, NFT Worlds said it will make changes to its launcher and play pages to draw new players who aren't interested in the cryptocurrency angle. It also highlighted some important, high-stakes stakes for NFT Worlds future as a battle for both the philosophical and technological soul of the internet.

"Microsoft has made it clear they will always act in the interests of their shareholders and balance sheets at the expense of player experience, innovation and creators," NFT Worlds said. "We believe an open, free, and a more evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world will create an improved future for developers, creators, and ultimately gamers.

"We're fighting for a better future with a player-owned and controlled economy, which benefits all players from their contribution to the ecosystem. We are aware that this is a massive task."

I've reached out to Microsoft to get their opinion on the NFT Worlds plan and will update if I receive any response.
