Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my sanity'



The day after it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) The Swedish developer behind the game Markus Persson - known as Notch released his own personal statement regarding the purchase. Below is the full statement.



Mojang has left me



I don't consider myself to be an actual game developer. The only way to get smarter is by playing a smarter opponent I make games because it's fun, and because I am a gamer and I love to program however I don't create games with the aim of them becoming huge hits, and I don't try to change the world.



Minecraft was a huge success. People tell me that it has changed their lives. It didn't happen by accident. It's certainly gratifying, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.



It was a long time ago that I decided to quit Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to run it and I was eager to try to try something new. While I tried to expand it again at first but was unsuccessful. However, since I decided to stick to small prototypes, intriguing challengeshave come up, and I've had so much fun doing my work.



While I wasn't sure how I would fit in to Mojang where the actual work was done, people told me I was important to the culture, so I decided to remain.



I was home with a bad cold a few weeks ago, when the internet exploded with rage against me due to an EULA situation that I had nothing to deal with. I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted this out of frustration.



Then I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and realized I didn't have the connection to my fans I thought I did. I have become a symbol. I don't want to become an object of ridicule. I don't want be responsible for something that I don’t understand. I don't want to tackle. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a geeky computer programmer who loves sharing my thoughts on Twitter.



Once this deal is completed and Mojang is closed, I will be leaving and return to Ludum Dares and small web-based experiments. If I make something that appears to gain momentum, I'll probably end it right away.



Given my public image which is already a bit distorted by me, I don’t expect to be able to ignore negative feedback, but at least I won't feel the need to look them up.



This is in direct contradiction to many of my public statements. I'm not sure of a response to this. I'm also aware that a lot of you used me as a symbol of the struggle you felt. I'm not. I'm a person and I'm struggling with you.



You are my best friend. You are amazing in every way. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I'm not responsible for something this big. In one sense, it's belong to Microsoft currently. In a much bigger sense, it's been owned by all of you for a long time, and that will never change.



It's not about the money. It's about my mental health.
