Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter
21 November 2014
The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most famous works in 3D within the virtual world of Minecraft. Is this a good method to appreciate art?
Ever fancied stepping inside the painting and going for a look around it?
The Tate is inviting people to clamber over its artworks and browse.
There will be no security guards on duty.
It has collaborated with the developers of Minecraft the online game on computers where millions of players meticulously build fantasy worlds block by block to create 3D versions of two of its artworks, in a new virtual gallery.
Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London, and Christopher Nevinson's portrayal of New York, Soul of the Soulless City (1920) are the first two paintings to receive this digital, 3D overhaul.
"Visitors will see a white cube which is the Tate Gallery," explains Jane Burton, Creative Director of Tate Media.
"You walk in with the painting in your hand.
"What you can do now is walk straight up to the painting, and then literally dive into it, you jump into it and that's where the adventure begins."

Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with the painting's world.
To get a glimpse of Nevinson's cityscape from the train, you can ride it. You can also stop for lunch with the builders while they take a break from building tall buildings.
Visitors must be wary of pirates in the Thames when visiting Derain's work and play around with mixing explosive paint pigments.
"You explore activities and challenges that relate to the themes of the artwork.
Jane Burton, whose children introduced Jane to the power and potential of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"
The idea to exhibit in Minecraft originated from the artist Adam Clarke, who is an acclaimed creator within the Minecraft community.
He proposed the idea for Tate's IK Prize, which is given to an idea that utilizes digital technology to inspire people with the arts.
When the idea eventually came to fruition, Tate enlisted the skills of other celebrity Minecraft builders such as Dragnoz, Kupo, Featherblade and Tewkesape to build the worlds inspired by the famous pictures.
However, not everyone is fully convinced.
Perspective
These Minecraft creations will provide younger, new audiences familiarity with artworks, and when they view the originals in a gallery, it will be like "seeing an old friend" according to Times art critic Rachel Campbell Johnston.
This feeling of recognition, "like seeing celebrities" is a powerful tool to inspire art appreciation and encourage viewers.
"But ironically, the Minecraft games themselves provide an enjoyable experience," she continues.
"It is more of an entertainment than an imaginative relationship to the painting. 3D mapping from [Minecrafts] replaces real painting's illusionistic surface by doing the work for me."

Digital opening
The two works by Derain and Nevinson will be downloadable from Monday.
Players pay a fee to join the Minecraft community, however the downloadable maps of the Tate's images are free.
With six more 3D masterpieces on the way, many will be keeping an eye to see how large the queues will be on Monday, when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
