E3 2022: Gaming Bonanza or Covid-hit Bore?

E3 2021: Gaming bonanza or Covid-hit bore? By Steffan Powell Newsbeat gaming reporter

It's not surprising that only a few new games were revealed at the E3 convention this year.

Game development has been greatly affected by Covid - as seen by the numerous delayed games released recently,

Press X to Continue reviewer Shay Thompson says this year's event had "a lot of padding". Her coworker Gav Murphy wonders if they shouldn't have "just had another year off".

However, there were some new games as well as plenty of fresh footage was shown off.

What were the highlights?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

A mysterious red-black flame flickers.

As the screen fades to black, there are flashes of an actress falling and struggling to get back up again.

The first few seconds of the trailer to the sequel to the Nintendo game Breath of the Wild brought fans into awe on the internet, with the announcement that it will be released in 2022.

While some may be concerned about the absence of a release date, the game that was displayed appeared to have created a storm among fans.

It was the culmination of the convention. However, there could have been some disappointment that Nintendo did not show anything else in this kind of quality.
i'm only good at one thing

Forza Horizon 5

At Microsoft's conference, Forza Horizon 5, the racing game Forza Horizon 5, was revealed. It will be played in Mexico.

Then, it was voted the most anticipated game to be presented at the convention.

Shay says, "It looks so much fun."

"It's arcade-style gaming goodness. You can tell that the team has spent a significant amount of time researching the subject and it's been translated into the game.

"It is a good idea to imagine how games will look on the new generation of consoles."

It is also one of the few major titles that will be accessible this year. Other games, like Starfield and Elden Ring are scheduled for 2022.

Some may be unhappy that Playground Games (the studio that made Forza Horizon) didn't have any evidence of their work on the Fable game which we are aware is currently in development.

Starfield

Since the teaser was released in 2018, there have been many inquiries about what it is.

We are now aware of the intriguing role-playing game Starfield, will involve flying in a spacecraft, exploring a galaxy and embarking on adventures for hundreds of years in the future.

Bethesda will be the Xbox exclusive and the first Fallout franchise to be launched in the last 25 years.

It's scheduled to be released in 2022.

Sea of Thieves

Gav says that the surprise collaboration between Sea of Thieves & Pirates of the Caribbean was the highlight of the show.

He says, "It's adding story-based content to the game."

"You can go on missions with Pirates of the Caribbean characters, but the world won’t be swept away. This doesn't seem like some strange and cynical way to make money.

"Sea of Thieves" is at its best when you're on cool missions with friends and this is why we're adding more content that is similar to that."

Elden Ring

This week, a question was answered: "What is Elden Ring?"

The collaboration between Game of Thrones author George R.R Martin and legendary game maker Hidetaka Miyazaki has finally received a release date.

Some had started to worry that we'd never play the game first announced in the year 2019 - following a serious lack of updates.

The game's developers claim that it will be available on consoles in January 2022.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Square Enix announced a surprise tie-in with Marvel Comics, which was welcomed by Marvel fans.

Released this October, the title lets you play the role of star lord Peter Quill and the trailer was full of his signature humor and one-liners.

But without the rights to use the looks of actors from Hollywood, the game hasn't been able to win everyone's attention.

Shay describes the footage as old fashioned "It appears to have come out about 10 years ago..

"Having these character models , which are pretty generic, and not Hollywood faces, was quite odd."

Indie games to get excited about

Inel Tomlinson of Press X to Keep's Inel Tomlinson claimed that the stars at this year's convention weren't the big titles, but the independent releases that were announced at the event.

He adds, "I enjoyed the indie games that were brought to the forefront of the public's focus this year at conferences."

"I enjoyed the game Replaced with its unique pixelated art mixed, and 12 minutes with Willem Dafoe.

"There are many smaller independent titles to be excited about."
