The Sacred Heart Church
The Sacred Heart Catholic Church was established in 1876. Its first mass was celebrated on May 28, 1876. Cardinal McCloskey blessed it on October 21, 1877. Father Mullen, who served as pastor for over thirty years, retired in 1908. He was succeeded by Rev. John J. Lennon. The church moved forward with plans for a new church building. Architect Elliott Lynch designed the church in the 15th century Gothic style. The new structure measures 120 by 75 feet. It was dedicated on April 14, 1912.

The Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic parish located at 1253 Shakespeare Avenue in the Bronx. Designed by Elliott Lynch, the church was originally connected to a school of the same name. The church has been undergoing several transformations in recent years. In 1910, the Y.M.C.A. purchased the plot near the Bowery for a new building.
