'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales

The Minecraft juggernaut shows no sign of slowing down. Today, the developer Mojang announced that the block-building game has surpassed 100 million sales across all platforms including PC, Mac, consoles and mobile. Since the beginning of the year, around 53,000 copies of the game have been sold each day around the world. The game is addictive. More than 40 million people open Minecraft every month to play with a shovel, axe, and sword. Except for Tetris, only a handful of games have come anywhere close to achieving the 100 million number.



Much of the success is due to the game's open design and endless possibilities. Players can create whatever they want with the help of its outward-facing geometry. is comprised of simple, vibrant blocks. Many players have continued to play for years, despite their age. Mojang has provided the game by releasing regular updates that have included new mechanics, creatures, and materials. Its flexibility has made it a huge hit in the classroom where it is used to teach science, art and even coding.



Many wondered what Microsoft had in mind for Mojang when it acquired the company a couple of years back. A sequel? Some kind of exclusivity to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? Actually, none of that has panned out. Minecraft is now accessible on more platforms than ever before, and there has been no mention of Minecraft 2. Minecraft 2. Instead we have the HoloLens Minecraft version, a spin-off adventure series by Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. This will soon result in a brand new, education focused Minecraft. Soon there will be a special version for China as well.



Minecraft's popularity shows no sign of waning. Its appeal isn't a finite story or tremendous graphics. MINECRAFT-NAMES Because of this it has a timeless appeal that draws young children as they get old enough to play it. Minecraft will continue to be sold in remarkable numbers in the long run.
