The Kerem Tunnel allows for a unique hiking and riding experience.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first bicycle tunnel, was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle route is located around Jerusalem.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction due to its rich past. Elkin stated that today along with its rich history the tunnel project includes modern tourism. "The inauguration of [this] tunnel project is another part of the growth of Jerusalem's city Jerusalem as well as its development into an attractive tourist destination for all kinds of people throughout Israel and throughout the globe."

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and the development of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the fascinating history of our capital city to the future of Jerusalem... I encourage cyclists to visit and enjoy an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that offers a view of the unique scenery of Old Jerusalem."

The project was funded by Elkin's ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a important tool to realize the vision of changing the concept for transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The tunnel, which connects to the long Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing bicycle routes in the city as well as those that will be paved in its various neighborhoods, in the hope of encouraging cycling among its residents and its visitors and in promoting the green transportation revolution in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the late 1990s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant located in Sorek It is situated west of the city and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel that also includes the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
