There will be an Appeals Process

Players can now report chat messages in multiplayer games using the new system, but the community is concerned about the implications.

A Mojang community manager has stated that the company will not be reversing its decision to implement the controversial player reporting feature. The manager also demanded an end to harassment of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit, MojangMeesh clarified that although the company is committed to player feedback, it won't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the upcoming reporting system". They also requested that angry players to stop "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to make them feel harassed in threads that aren't related to their work. The post received close to 2000 downvotes at the time of writing.

Minecraft players have been up in arms over the new player reporting system since it was announced a month ago, but it was finally implemented as part of yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on private and Mojang-hosted servers to report inappropriate messages in chat to be reviewed by Mojang investigators, which could result in suspensions and bans for players that violate Minecraft's rules for community participation, even on servers hosted by a third party. Some players are concerned that the system could lead to bans for players who have posted messages that were taken out of context, and, more generally, that it gives Microsoft too much options to control what content is displayed on its platform.

Although some players might be acting in a negative manner about it, I don't think their argument is without merit. It's difficult to imagine a scenario in where this system doesn't disqualify someone for making a joke with friends. Although there may be appeals, it's evident that there are numerous misconceptions about how the system works. There are people who complain about their chat being monitored by Microsoft' or fearing they'll be banned for using profanity in any thread. None of these are possible according Mojang's FAQ on the reporting system.

Mojang is in a a bind on this one. A thread by Stuart Duncan-who runs a Minecraft server for children with autism-reveals how much awful stuff Minecraft plays host to on a regular basis. Duncan presents studies and reports from the ADL as well as the BBC and other sources which tell tales of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. The provision of tools to combat that kind of behavior is crucial. While it's true that "think of the children' scare stories get used to justify repressive policies in real life the tool that allows users to report dodgy chat messages in Minecraft isn't the tip of a draconian wedge.

If you are saying "no one ever asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one needs this", please stop trying to be a spokesperson for everyone. "If you are worried about the exploitation of others, that's great. I'm too. It's not perfect, but real people can be saved by it. July 27 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang has announced that the game won't be featuring NFTs since they're at odds with its "values of creative inclusion". The move at least received an enthusiastic response from the player base however there's no word yet on what that AI they trained to play Minecraft thinks about it.

One of Josh's earliest memories is of playing Quake 2 on the family computer when he was far too young to be playing that and he's been irreparably game-brained ever since. Since the time, his writing has been featured in Vice, Fanbyte, and the Financial Times. He can play almost every game, and has written about everything, from visual novels to Assassin's creed. His most fervent interests are CRPGs as well as immersive sims. He believes that you're all too harsh about Deus Ex: Invisible War.
