Minecraft's ray tracing function for Windows 10 has made its release from beta just eight months after the feature was first made available for testers. 1 Game / Day The game's aesthetics have been changed by the addition of ray tracing support to NVIDIA's RTX graphic cards. As we mentioned in our hands-on post earlier this year, the realistic lighting, reflections and shadows the feature brings make Minecraft feel more immersive. Yes, the game is as bloated as ever however, the in-game sun appears real, for example reflections and shadows can make you feel as if you're in a virtual world.
To enjoy the benefits of ray tracing to the game, you'll have to play it on a computer equipped with a GPU from NVIDIA that can handle rendering rays. Only maps and worlds that use a physical-based texture pack will reap the advantages. It's not necessary to do anything, it's already enabled by default. Other players who do not have access to this feature will be able to view those worlds with normal visuals.
In its announcement, NVIDIA says ray tracing is more demanding on your GPU, which is why it makes use of its DLSS AI rendering technology to ensure Minecraft with RTX will continue to run at minimum 60 FPS at 1920x1080. More advanced GPU models (RTX 3080 and 3090) are able to run the game in 4K resolution at over 60FPS.
You can download worlds that you can play with Ray Tracing on the Marketplace or create your own with help from NVIDIA's starter pack, if you need it. NVIDIA and Minecraft are also releasing two new worlds free of charge: Colosseum RTX has already been released, and Dungeon dash RTX is expected to be released soon.
