Minecraft Owner Bans NFTs In-game to stop Profiteering

Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strong stance against NFTs. The studio, which is owned by Microsoft and Microsoft, has declared that the integration of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they would allow or support.

"To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and enjoyable experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be used into our server and client applications, nor can Minecraft in-game content such as skins, worlds, personal items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset," Mojang said.

Mojang claims that a few companies have created "NFT Implementations that are bundled with Minecraft World Files and Skin Packs." This suggests that Minecraft players could earn NFTs from playing on servers or through earning NFTs outside of Minecraft.

Mojang claims that these practices promote digital exclusion and scarcity, which is contrary to Minecraft's values. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a semblance of the haves and the have-nots," the studio said. Mojang adds that NFTs' speculative nature "encourages profiteering."

I strongly recommend that you read the entire blog post, as it succinctly lays out the many criticisms of NFTs and blockchain projects in language that's easy to comprehend. plussoc.com (There are quite a few more quotes that I could have included.)

Valve has also taken a firm stand against NFTs and blockchain games on Steam. A majority of the gaming community has rejected NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative was launched. Epic Games said last year that it is "open" to blockchain-based games on the Epic Games Store, and the first blockchain-based game was added to the store in June.

Mojang does not completely rule out the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology in the future. However, it states that "we don't have plans to implement blockchain technology into Minecraft in the near future."
