Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Create'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft are not allowed to purchase game content like worlds, persona items, skins and other mods through NFTs.

Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time does not support NFTs because they "create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots".

In a highly worded article posted on the Minecraft website yesterday (20 July) the developer Mojang Studios said that the inclusion of NFTs could be incompatible with the game's values.

"NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership based on exclusion and scarcity, which does not align with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with others," the company wrote.

"The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs take the focus away from playing the game and encourages profit-seeking, which we believe is not in line with the long-term joy and the success of our players."

Minecraft has said that the statement was in response to comments from members of the community who sought clarifications regarding the studio's position regarding NFTs and blockchain.

This means that Minecraft, unlike other virtual world games, will not allow blockchain integrations into its server or client applications. In-game content like worlds, skins, persona items and other mods will not be built on NFTs.

Mojang is a Microsoft-owned business It also said it was concerned about third-party NFTs. Minecraft stuff These NFTs may not be reliable and end up costing customers who buy them. It highlighted scenarios where third-party NFT managers could "disappear without notice" or NFTs could be "sold at fraudulently or artificially exaggerated prices".

"We recognize that the creation within our game is intrinsically valuable and we work hard to provide a marketplace where those values can be recognised."

Online gaming has seen an increase in interest in blockchain technologies such as NFTs. This topic was also discussed at Future Human earlier in the year.

Companies such as GameStop have expressed confidence in NFTs as a significant element in the future of gaming, and has launched its own NFT marketplace.

Some companies aren't all-in. EA's CEO has previously stated that NFTs and blockchain could be the future of gaming, but recently added: "Right now, it's not something we're pushing for a long time".
