The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel is now open in the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.

It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance can be found within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half a km from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday, by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin as well as Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon the chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists were also in attendance.

Elkin explained that the modern tourist industry is a part of Jerusalem's historic treasures and incorporates modern day tourism. Elkin's Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million for the project. נווה פריצקי Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said, "The Kerem Tunnel project will be the central tool for achieving our dream to change the notion of transportation in Jerusalem." Elkin said that the new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path and will link with existing bike trails. It will also be made paved in the various areas. This will help cyclists and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s to relocate its main sewer line towards the Sorek purification plant.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are some of the ongoing works to make the tunnel safer for all year.

Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the Biblical aquarium and zoo as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
