The French and Indian War began in 1754 and continued on until 1763,in which many historical events took place that played a major part in the development of North America. The most significant of those events that took place throughout this war began with the British gaining interest in the economic development of North American colonists, resulting in economic competition between these two neighboring societies. The North American colonies had been successfully developing their economy by not only increasing the development of raw materials, but the manufacturing and entire raw material industry as a whole began to gain economic success (Pg.79). At this time, the American colonists were not keen on the idea of being under British control, because they were used to little to no control being enforced on them through what is known as "salutary neglect" (Pg.79) in which the British rarely tried to enact any form of control of the colonists. Salutary neglect allowed the colonists to have free reign of essentially their entire colonies and their trade laws in those colonies, as long as the colonists continued to provide crops and economical benefits to the British rulers (Pg.79). One of the most significant disputes that resulted in the start of The French and Indian War began by the colonists continuing to expand their want for land throughout the Ohio Valley (Pg. 81), which the French did not take so kindly to. The French built a large fort, known as Fort Duquesne, which was then rivalled by the British creating Fort Necessity near where the French would notice it. George Washington, then known as a general, was sent to stop the development of more Forts by the French, which resulted in the beginning of a war. British merchants and colonists wanted to have control over their own trade laws, as well as control of all of the trade laws within that region, that France currently had control over, in order to further the economical benefits generated by controlling all of the trade laws, resulting in the British economy hopefully flourishing. The British government then used the dispute that took place with the French involving the creation of those forts as a way to eventually control all of the trade laws and trade routes. This war involved many Indian nations, Spain, Austria, France, Britain, and Russia, was to be known as The Seven Year's War by the Europeans, and in North America, as The French and Indian War. Knowing that this was likely to begin a war between these countries, British colonists decided to send seven colonists to Albany, New York, each representing a different colony, known as The Albany Congress (Pg. 81). This meeting taking place gave the British multiple ideas on how they would address this dispute, and wanted to align with the Iroquois tribe, which was made up of Native North Americans, but this want to align was not reciprocated by them. The Iroquois tribe decided on continuing to stay neutral in order to save their trade relationships and routes with the newly neighboring colonies. The British had decided on creating what is now known as the Albany Plan, in which a union would be created between all of the colonies as whole, where the British government would handle all interactions with Native North Americans and would have the ability to manage all colonies through each colony having a number of representatives which would be decided by the amount of tax money that was generated by each colony (Pg. 81). Although the Albany Plan did not work out, it allowed the government to recognize the importance of working together, instead of being under separate rule, even though many colonists were not excited about this idea. Towards the beginning of this war, the British did not perform as well as they believed they would. Only three years into the war, lead by a seemingly reckless individual known as Edward Braddock, the British had lost the majority of their soldiers. Losing a majority of your soldiers marked a significant change for the British, they were now deciding to hire a new general and take this war much more seriously, eventually resulting in the British gaining success in the war and subsequently marking the end of this war, in which the Treaty of Paris would be signed (Pg. 81). The treaty that eventually brought the lengthy French and Indian War to an end, is known as the Treaty of Paris. This Treaty was signed in 1763, when the majority of this war had already taken place, and was signed by France, Britain, and Spain. One of the major provisions that was decided on within this treaty was that the Mississippi River was now to be a boundary between Spain's land and Britain's land, as well as entirely removing France from occupying land in North America (Pg. 81&82).
