First look at virtual reality Minecraft at Xbox showcase Dave Lee North America technology reporter
1 March 2016
Millions of gamers love Minecraft. Microsoft now shows us how virtual reality can be developed.
Microsoft bought the block-building game in 2014 for $2.5bn (PS1.8bn) which was an incredible deal that left players worried about its future.
The US firm promised not to alter its well-known formula and instead will invest in bringing Minecraft to the next level.
In a special event held in San Francisco's fashionable Mission District, its Xbox division showcased the virtual real-world version of Minecraft for the first time.
Palmer Luckey, creator and designer of Oculus Rift VR headset, claimed that it makes you feel as if you're in Minecraft.
Like other VR experiences, it's utterly absorbing. For those obsessed with Minecraft's addictive build process, it's a huge improvement over watching it on a normal screen.
Parents might be concerned about $1,500 that is the price of a game that is popular for children.
That's the amount they'll need to spend in order to purchase an Oculus Rift headset as well as an operating system that can provide the power.
This is surely too costly, so I suggested to Mr. Luckey.
"It isn't," he said.
It's expensive however, it has many more features than a television or mobile phone.
"It's not as if this is a simple piece of hardware and the cost is going to decrease as time passes."
If it is to be accepted by mainstream audiences it must be slowed down quickly.
In the meantime, I'd expect that there will be a slight revival of the games arcade which is a place where people go to play high-end games that they can't feasibly afford to buy for their homes.
Big titles
Oculus Minecraft was among the several games that were on display at the Xbox Spring Showcase. This allowed journalists (and some YouTube stars) the opportunity to play a few of the blockbusters of the future.
Quantum Break was a fascinating world that made me lose an hour. It's a game in which you play Jack Joyce, an uncooperative action hero who gains the ability to manipulate time following an experiment that went wrong.
If that sounds like yet another predictable scenario for games, you'd be right. But the game's mechanics (think "bullet time" but with a twist) make it something special.
Also, be sure to read Tom Clancy's The Division -- set in a meticulously accurate-to-life Manhattan.
Many of the games featured on the show were advertised as being great to use on a PC via Microsoft's Windows 10 operating systems.
"If you look at the numbers, PC gaming has the fastest-growing gaming segment," stated Phil Spencer who is the director of Xbox.
"It's only normal that we'd concentrate on gaming on Windows."
Virtual plans
When it comes to virtual reality, Microsoft has opted not to develop its own headset, even though it is developing the virtual reality-focused Hololens but is instead working to make it compatible with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Concerning the price debate, Mr Spencer said he believed virtual reality would follow the path of high definition TVs as a luxury product to start with, but hard to resist once you've experienced it.
He said, "The early adopters of VR will be there to spur the industry."
With the news that Sony's PlayStation 4 will soon get its own VR headset I asked whether Microsoft might consider creating its own equipment.
He added, "I believe it could be something that's part of our roadmap." However, he said that the focus is now on creating Windows 10 fully-compatible with high-end VR titles.
'Not hacked'
Of course, new games mean nothing unless gamers can connect to the internet to play them. This has been a major challenge.
Insufficient reliability on Xbox Live - the service Xbox gamers utilize to play against each other online has strained out thousands of players.
Snoop Dogg is one of the fans who are unhappy with their service. He has pleaded with Bill Gates to fix the issue, or else he'd change to PlayStation.
Mr. Spencer apologized for the issue.
He added, "It's evidently always regretful."
"This last outage was a problem that we learned from. It took us a little longer to grasp the issue, but it was clear.
He denied that the company was the victim of a cyberattack, saying that although its network was under constant attack, it was not like it was claimed, wiped out by an organized attempt to block gamers.
Snoop Dogg is at risk of losing his identity: "Snoop has been a long-time Xbox gamer and fan for a long time.
Fake Root
"I am able to understand when people are upset. It is a sign that people care and are committed to the work we do as a game platform.
