What do Things Taste Like?

Alex: You have also contributed to an open Marketplace map of Summer's base.



Max Brooks: Yeah! When you go into the map, it's after Summer and Guy have moved on so the mountain you're looking at is not exactly as it was in the book. That was another difficult task. I was at the halfway point of writing The Mountain when I finally decided to sit down and play the game. The Nether changed from top to bottom. Instead of being angry I realized that this was the most important lesson in my life. When the world changes, you gotta change with it.



Alex: The book is extremely detailed similar to The Island.



Max Brooks: Research is essential to me in everything I do. Because I spend a lot of time doing research I don't have the time to write as many books. With a game like Minecraft, I live under the fear that someone will say, "That would never happen!" So I played thousands of hours in Minecraft and made sure that the physics of the game are reflected in the book. Plus, there are certain things that just happen in Minecraft that you can't imagine on your own. My character in The Island shoots his last shot at a creeper, and then hits a bat which is hit through. It happened to me when I was playing Minecraft!



Alex: The fun of these books is the way they feel real.



Max Brooks: Yeah, and, in everything I write, I'm hoping to establish trust with the reader. Minecraftservers They must be confident that they can trust me to lead them journey through a country that I knowabout, and that I serve as their tour guide.



Alex I really enjoyed your insights into what Minecraft smells like. It was a great perspective Netherrack.



Max Brooks: Sarah Peed, my editor, is a true blessing. She encouraged me to write my first book and asked me what the Island was like. What's the flavor? What is the feeling of the breeze on your face? What does the grass feel under your feet? I wanted the book to feel awe-inspiring and engrossing, so I thought of netherrack, it should smell sulfurous. It should smell like farts. Yes, you read that right! Night Vision should taste like carrot soda. It should be tangy, bubbly, and have a little bite on the tongue. I wanted people to feel as if they were there.
