Minecraft video game to unlock Tate art "worlds" By Reuters

LONDON, November 20 (Reuters) – Minecraft fans will be able to explore the worlds created by British art at the Tate museums. Two 3-D "Tate Worlds" are available for free download to download from Monday.



Minecraft players Minecraft created by Swedish company Mojang can create nearly anything you can imagine block-by-block in a digital universe.



"Minecraft is a wonderful game that encourages imagination and creativity," Jane Burton, Creative Director of Tate Media, said in a statement on Thursday.



It has attracted the attention of millions of youngsters around the world. In playfully reimagining art in Tate Worlds for Minecraft we hope to introduce a new generation to inspirational works from Tate's collection."



The Tate worlds were inspired by two paintings: Andre Derain's 1906 painting "The Pool of London"; and Christopher Nevinson’s 1920 painting of New York, “Soul of the Soulless City”.



Derain's painting depicts a scene with tenders and cargo ships with London's Tower Bridge in the background. The Nevinson depicts skyscrapers and tracks of an elevated railway line that stretches into the distance.

Tate declared that "Tate Worlds, Soul of the Soulless City" will transport players to 1920s New York. They will board a train that takes them past New York landmarks, and then they'll accelerate to the future, as towering buildings rise around them.



"The sights and sounds of the "Roaring 20s will be part of the journey as the players construct a skyscraper, join construction workers for a dangerous sky-high lunch , and try to catch a film," the museum said.



The museum announced that six more "Tate Worlds” maps will be released over the next year, with the themes of "Play" and "Destruction" and "Fantasy". These maps were inspired by famous artworks.



This includes John Singer Sargent's "Carnation Lily, Lily Rose" (1885-6) Peter Blake's "The Toy Shop” (1962), John Martin’s "The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum” (1822), and Cornelia Parker's "Cold Dark Matter An Exploded View" (1991).



The "Tate Worlds" were created in conjunction with "leading Minecraft mapmakers", the museum said, and will be available for download at (www.tate.org.uk/tateworlds).



Microsoft announced that it was buying Mojang for $2.5 Billion in September.
