Poker Game - Basic Strategies

Fixed limit poker has a set betting limit that you must follow. A $1/$2 table means that the maximum bet allowed in the first two rounds of play is $1, and the maximum in the final round is $2. These rules apply to any raises. A no-limit table is one that does not have betting limits. There are no betting limits and you can raise your entire pot every bet if you wished. Fixed limit is less popular that no-limit. It's not seen in TV tournaments. However it can be helpful for those who are still learning the game as it prevents you from being drawn into large bets.

One basic strategy that can be used for betting in Texas Hold'Em is to try to focus on what cards you think the other players are holding in their hands. To get clues about what the other players are planning, it is important to observe them. To be successful at betting, it is important to get to know the other players at your table so that you can place bets without them guessing.

Following the deal, each player is dealt one card face down. A series of betting follows, starting to left of the bigblind. Betting is limited to fixed limits (bets/raises that are equivalent to big blind), and the blinds remain live, just as in Holdem.

If you are the first player to bet, and if you bet an amount within the betting limits of that particular poker game, then that amount will go into the pot. Call option means that players bet the same amount as the total amount of the bet. Initially, the raise option allows players to bet enough that they match the amount of another player's bet, and then later raise another amount. Fold option is where one loses all chance of winning the pot if he drops out of the current game.

Omaha Hold'em: This game resembles Texas hold'em in the fact that it is played with five community cards. Each player gets four cards. He then makes his best hand by using two cards and three community cards. There are two options for this game: Omaha Hi/Lo Split or Omaha High Only. Omaha Poker Hi/Lo is most popular. In this variation, not only the one with the highest hand wins but the one with the lowest combination also gets a part of the pot.

This next round of betting on the flop will begin with the small blind, leaving the dealer last to act. Each player can bet, call, raise, or fold based on their current five-card poker hand. The action continues clockwise until all raises are called, or all poker cards have been folded.
