The Kerem Tunnel allows for a an experience that is unique in terms of hiking and riding.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is opened as part a 42-kilometer cycle route that is a loop around the capital.


נווה פריצקי connects Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel in Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel was officially opened in a ceremony held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction due to its rich past. Elkin explained that the modern tourism industry is one of Jerusalem's treasures from the past and is also a part of modern-day tourism. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is yet another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all kinds of tourists in Israel and all over the world."

נווה פריצקי , whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and in the creation of new activities and ventures that connect the glorious historical past of our capital city to its future... I encourage you to take your bicycles along a beautiful maintained, well-maintained path that looks out over Old Jerusalem.

The project was financed by the Elkin's department and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

נווה פריצקי stated the fact that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to change the way we think about transport in Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which connects to the long Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing bike routes in the city as well as the ones that will be laid in the various neighborhoods to encourage cycling among its residents and its visitors as well as in promoting the green revolution in transportation in the capital city."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line towards Sorek's purification plant.

To make the tunnel usable to the public all year round, the works include road construction, as well as installing blowers.
