Rick, a tipter, sent us some strange forum drama that warrants our attention. Wow-servers.co One user on the server Anvilmar-US, Demetreus, was accused of stealing from the guild bank and Gquitting (along with his friend Morph). Zaknafaine was a member of his former guild HaVoK wrote in a post "its just an game...its not like any of us is going to show up at your doorstep and beat you up." [sic]
Demetreus took it as an attack and claims to have contacted his lawyer. Of course, his lawyer agrees with him, and he's now in jail as he tries to defend himself.
Who knows who is right and who is wrong regarding the bank's theft, but it's not the point in the first place. What I find most extraordinary is Demetreus's reaction to a threat from someone and felt the need to contact an attorney. According to me, it was not. The alleged threat was actually quite the opposite: an assertion that none of this mattered - that it was just playing.
In addition, I was involved in some legal posturing over in-game and out-of-game harassment. The attorneys advised us of the number one rule: "Don't make a big deal about it Keep the situation private, don't reveal yourself." I've heard that advice before on a variety of legal issues, and a I'm left wondering if Demetreus was told the same thing, and then why he isn't following that (of course, the underlying context here is that he might be making it up). It's quite shocking witness legal action being threatened due to forum-related drama and then to have it brought up in this way.
However, I realize that I shouldn't be too surprised by this considering the WoW community's ability to create and sustain itself through dramatic forum posts. However I'm left thinking, "Really?" Over a forum comment?"
