New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Recall Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins, Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard is back after years sporting a neat-shaven appearance. The iconic blue-shirted character of the game of crafting, Minecraft Steve's original model featured an unnatural brown goatee that many players mistook for a beaming smile - but it was removed in an attempt to create a gender-neutral style for the game's default character.



In 2014, another default skin was introduced to Minecraft the game - Minecraft Alex. Alex has green skin with long red hair, and a ponytail. This makes it a feminine version of Steve's. Microsoft studio head for Minecraft Helen Chiang said in an interview in 2018 that Microsoft wanted to use the Minecraft brand to subvert traditional gender stereotypes by presenting Alex and Steve as having similar physical characteristics and abilities.



Now, with the two choices available to players, it was decided to bring back Steve's famous goatee. A post to the Minecraft subreddit highlighted the new skins that also improve the shading of Alex to give the second character an authentic three-dimensional appearance. The initial reaction is mostly one of joy and excitement, with many fans especially excited to see Steve's first bearded look returning.



Many commenters claimed that Steve is now in line with official art, which includes the appearance of the character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I can see why they first took it off," says the most popular comment in the Reddit thread at the time of writing, "but it was clearly a big element of Steve's design and it seems that Mojang also agrees. It's great to see it return after many years.



Jasper Boerstra, Minecraft's lead artist, expressed his opinion on the change via Twitter. He wrote, "I'm glad you like the return of the beard!" Boerstra also noted that classic banding techniques and "pillow shading" are used in the new skins, however, he asked users to weigh in on whether or not this choice was a good one.
