While players have been permitted to charge fees for access to private Minecraft servers that they control However, the company's guidelines on usage insist that "all players must be able to access the same functionality" in those servers. This is in contradiction to the main point of NFTs which Mojang describes as "digital ownership that is built on scarcity or exclusion" which is not in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion playing with others, and sharing.
Mojang is also concerned about "instances where NFTs were sold in a fraudulent manner or at fraudulently exaggerated prices" and also situations where NFT assets "may require an asset manager, who could disappear without notice." Mojang warns that these issues could lead to "some third-party NFTs not being trustworthy" and may cost players who purchase NFTs.
Mojang keeps a sliver a door open for future NFT applications that could "allow for more secure gaming or other inclusive and practical applications in gaming." The company says it does not have plans to introduce blockchain technology in Minecraft.
An external rug pull?
Mojang's announcement is going to have a major impact on projects such as NFT Worlds. Minecraft-servers.live NFT Worlds sells NFTs that are linked to world seeds that are used for specific Minecraft maps. OpenSea data indicates that NFT Worlds has traded over 500.000 Ethereum (or $76 million if you use today's exchange rates) with individual world tokens selling on average for around 2.5 ETH (about 3,700 today).
NFT World tokens have been falling in daily trading for months, despite the greater crypto crash that occurred in the last few months. Mojang's Wednesday announcement triggered an increase in the price of NFT Worlds cryptocurrency by nearly 70 percent.
