In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza path. The southern entrance of the tunnel is below Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and hundreds of cyclists attended a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.


Jerusalem was once very popular tourist destination because of its historic past. נווה פריצקי Elkin said that apart from its historic treasures the modern tourist industry is incorporated into Jerusalem's city. "The inauguration[of] the tunnel project is a different element of the progress of Jerusalem and its transformation to an attractive tourist destination for all types throughout Israel and the world.

Elkin who's ministry responsible for the project, along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry has invested thousands of shekels every year in the city's tourism development and also in the creation of new attractions and ventures that will connect the magnificent historic past with the the future of Jerusalem. I invite cycling enthusiasts to come and enjoy a modern and well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the special scenery of Old Jerusalem."

The project was funded by Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is the central instrument for achieving the goal to alter the notion of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin stressed. נווה פריצקי נווה פריצקי "The new tunnel that connects to Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as the ones that will be paved within its neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage cycling among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green revolution in transport in the capital."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. https://www.israelhayom.co.il/mumlazim/article/13057097 It is currently being used as an infrastructure Tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Construction of roads, the installation and testing of electrical and safety systems are just a few of the ongoing works to ensure the tunnel is safe for all seasons.
