A ground source heat pump uses the energy from the ground outside to heat the building. It’s very energy-efficient (500%) and is a good way of generating heat which is supported by the government’s new Clean Heat Grant, which had replaced the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme now.
The installation of a ground source heat pump does generally cost more than more traditional heating systems as there are more components and larger pipes are needed, but they have very low maintenance costs. They can be installed anywhere in the UK with ample space/garden to provide heating and hot water. This is a good option if you’re planning to minimize the environmental impact of your home. It's expected that ground-to-water heat pumps are likely to become common in the UK thanks to the grant, but also because they can deliver a home’s heating and hot water on-demand at much lower running costs and have no impact on the environment.
How much does a ground source heat pump (GSHP) cost you?
On average, the supply and installation of a ground source heat pump will cost in the region of £20000-£40000. Ground-to-water is the more expensive option, costing an average of £28,000 for supply and installation which is the more common option for larger homes.
Ground source heat pumps are a more expensive option than many traditional heating systems compared to air source heat pump s but the benefit to the environment is considerable with both systems (GSHP-ASHP) The high cost of Ground source heat pump installation has often been deemed a problem for many homeowners, along with the land/space need-when compared to a new gas boiler installation or air source heat pump for example. However, the real benefit comes both in the carbon-free emissions and the significant reduction of ongoing energy bills.
With the new ground source heat pump grant of £6000 upfront payment being available in April/May 2022, it may be a very smart option for you now with current energy prices on the rise!
