Spotify Got a Big Boost this Year from an Unexpected Audience

Gamers were glued to their consoles early. The amount of music streamed from gaming consoles between 6am and 9am has increased 47% compared to last year. Their preferred genre? Mostly rap and trap music. The most popular songs that were streamed on gaming consoles were "The Box" by Roddy Ricch, "Blueberry Faygo" by Lil Mosey, "goosebumps" by rapper Travis Scott, "ROCKSTAR" by DaBaby with. Roddy Ricch and "Falling" by Trevor Daniel.

Spotify traffic for Travis Scott, who has deals with McDonalds, PlayStation and Fortnite and more, soared after he performed an online concert in Fortnite. The streaming platform said that the number of streams increased by 207% worldwide between April 26 and April 30 of last year, compared to the previous year.

People were actually looking for music from video games. The most played soundtracks to video games this year were "Minecraft," the original "Doom" and "Death Stranding."

2020 was also a big year for virtual artists - people who are represented by fictional characters like the band Gorillaz. Japanese virtual singer Hatsune Miku saw streams go up by 136% in the year.

Riot Games, the company behind "League of Legends" has created a virtual pop star group called K/DA in 2018. Their name is a nod to the common League of Legends lingo: the deaths, kills and assists players rack up in every game, and get noted on the scoreboard. This year, Riot brought the group, voiced by real-life singers returning with a new album, whose songs were atop the Billboard charts. Spotify grew its streams by 109 percent.

Riot said that its invention of K/DA has helped it gain a wider audience beyond League gamers and get more people interested in the game's content, it said to CNN Business in a statement.

Cook said that music and gaming go hand-in-hand, because gamers listen to music while they play.

Spotify continues to look into partnerships with gaming companies. Spotify recently joined forces with League of Legends. It continues to work with Microsoft on the Xbox and PlayStation platforms.

As gaming console streams have increased, Spotify has added to its curated playlists, "thinking through how and what people would like to listen to while playing," said Cook.
