Grenfell Tower: Builders 'gaming System' to Avoid Fire Safety Rules

Grenfell Tower: Builders 'gaming system' to circumvent fire safety rules

12 November 2021

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has warned that builders could be "gaming" the system to bypass safety checks for fires following the Grenfell Tower fire.

Paul Jennings, Deputy Commissioner, stated that there are "hundreds of thousands, if not thousands" new buildings that could have been designed deliberately to circumvent rules.

These blocks are blocks that are lower than the 18m (59ft limit) to be considered high-rise buildings.

The minister for safety in the construction industry has branded attempts to "cut corners" as "shocking".

The Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 caused the deaths of 72 people.

Speaking to BBC Newsnight, Mr Jennings said: "We have got examples where we think people are deliberately planning and building their homes below the 18-metre, six-floor threshold, as they know if they reach that threshold , they'll need to implement sophisticated and more complex fire security measures in."

Mr Jennings said that the new buildings in the capital as examples of "gaming the system".

When asked how many new London buildings were being constructed to circumvent the rules, he replied that it was likely "hundreds or even thousands".

He added, "We are seeing about 60% of the building consults that are brought into the fire engineering team and some are ones where we're going backwards."

Two weeks ago, LFB said all but three of the recommendations made by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry will be in place by 2022.

Michael Gove spoke Monday to the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee and said that "We collectively - some of us in local government, some in the private sector and some in the department - have failed people in Grenfell and there are people who have been and are in buildings where there's a significant risk."
