Neve ParitzkiJerusalem is home to the world's first bicycle tunnel in Israel.

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding that is to be enjoyed by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's first cycle tunnel, was inaugurated as part of Jerusalem Ring Path. This 42-kilometer cycle path surrounds Jerusalem.


The tunnel links the paths between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entry point is located within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. While the northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour from the Kerem junction.

נווה פריצקי נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was officially opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and heritage minister Ze'evElkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon and a plethora of other cyclists were also in attendance.

נווה פריצקי Jerusalem was once popular tourist destination because of its historical past. Elkin stated that today along with its rich history, the tunnel project also incorporates modern-day tourism. "The launch (of [this] tunnel project is another aspect of the expansion of Jerusalem, and it's transformation into a sought-after tourist destination for all kinds of people across Israel as well as around the globe."

Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism in all its aspects and also in the development of exciting activities and ventures that connect the rich history of our capital city to its future... I invite the cycling community to ride a secure and modernized route that will take you through Old Jerusalem.

A total of NIS 25 million was put into in the project, budgeted by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, as well as the work done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is a central tool for realizing the vision to transform the idea of transportation across Jerusalem," Elkin stressed. "The new tunnel will be connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will link to the numerous bicycle paths that are already in the city. These will be paved within the various areas. The objective is to promote cyclists in the city.

In the 1990s in the 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to relocate the main sewer line of Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used as an infrastructure tunnel. It houses the fifth water line to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

In order to make the tunnel accessible to the general public throughout the year, the works include road construction as well as the installation of blowers.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites such as the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium and the historical natural springs in Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh. נווה פריצקי
