Several wireless carriers are offering iPhone 14s to customers who sign up for their service.
IPhone users are seeing offers for free smartphones from major carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

A number of US carriers are offering customers the latest iPhones for free, subject to certain conditions. These conditions include having an old iPhone to qualify. AT&T and T-Mobile are giving customers up to $1,000 cash back by allowing them to trade-in old iPhone models. Verizon is offering a similar offer — for $800 cash back — for buying an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro. Verizon is offering up to $800 credit if customers trade-in old iPhones for the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, according to a list of offers compiled by Apple.
Apple managed to keep the pricing for its latest iPhone relatively steady at $799, with an additional $800 offered to iPhone users who trade-in their old models to qualify for the deals. IPhone 14s starting at $999 for the base model, and at $1,099. For the higher-end iPhone 14, pricing is much more expensive — the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999, and the iPhone 14 Max at $1,099. When consumers are feeling the pinch from all sides, carriers are offering incentives that help them price the latest iPhones more attractively.

Wireless carriers that have invested in the latest network technology may be willing to give customers big discounts on the latest iPhone models to get them to upgrade to 5G-enabled smartphones. Word News invested billions of dollars in their own 5G networks, and they're trying to get a return on their investment, said Tom Forte, a senior analyst at D.A. Davidson.
IPhones capable of using 5G networks are as old as the iPhone 12, which was released in 2020.
Some carriers will give away new iPhones for free because they think they can afford to do it because old iPhone models still have good value. Many of these carriers also sell used iPhones and refurbished iPhones for very little money.

In the United States, the latest iPhones have no SIM card tray and are now fully eSIM compatible. Apple is making it easier for customers to swap out their old wireless service if they have a compatible iPhone model. But the carriers may also be offering more aggressive offers that could lead consumers to sign up with them – something that's been done by wireless carriers since the iPhone 12 was launched – to make them happy.

It's important to understand the fine print, as many of these deals are often negotiated as part of a contract, something that has been done in the industry since the advent of the cellphone. If you take advantage of some of these iPhone 14 promotions, but then decide to cancel the contract after a few months, you may be responsible for a lot more than the cost of the new phone.

Apple and carriers are trying to capitalize on the growing popularity of pay-as-you-go plans among consumers in recent years, says Julie Ask, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester. People are also increasingly looking for ways to pay for a new iPhone over time, even if those plans are for a longer period of time.
There's been a significant increase in consumers willing to pay monthly for their devices, she said. Even if they're not able to offer you a great deal, carriers are able to lock you into a plan for a while (or a significant amount of time), and that's something that many consumers are willing to pay for.
