Neve ParitzkiJerusalem is home to the first tunnel for bicycles in Israel.

The Kerem Tunnel is a great location to go on a hike or ride.
The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.

The tunnel runs through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza path. Its southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was inaugurated on Thursday, by Jerusalem and the heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon Chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists were also in attendance.

The project was financed by Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the vision to change the concept of transportation in Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. "The tunnel, which connects to the long Jerusalem Ring Path, will join existing bike routes in the city as well as those that will be paved throughout the city's neighborhoods in the hope of encouraging cycling among the city's residents as well as its visitors as well as in promoting the green transportation revolution in the capital city."

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is located west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

Current work includes road construction, installation blowers and advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe to use all year.
