FRANKFURT (Reuters, Sept 12) -- British games maker Bossa Studios announced Tuesday that it has raised $10 million through an investment round that was led by European venture capital firm Atomico prior to the launch for Worlds Adrift, a pirate-themed online multiplayer game.
Bossa founders Henrique Olifiers and Imre Jele were involved in the development of RuneScape which is a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) with more than 250 million user accounts created since its launch in 2001.
Atomico was founded by Niklas Zennstrom, the Skype co-founder will be represented by Mattias Ljungman co-founder and partner of Atomico, and Alexis Bonte, Atomico-affiliated game entrepreneur who will join Bossa.
Worlds Adrift features pirates tasked with creating an airship, securing crew and taking control of skies that are filled with floating islands.

It's expected to be the first game on general release built on the SpatialOS platform of Improbable Improbable, a British firm that in May raised $502 million in a funding round led by Japan's SoftBank Group Corp, valuing it at over $1 billion.
Improbable uses cloud computing to digitally recreate real-world locations for games and in product design.
Bossa said the $10 million Series A investment will be joined by the original investor, London Venture Partners, which is a specialist in early-stage funding for new games.
It stated that it will utilize the funds for staff recruitment to develop artificial intelligence, user generated content, and community-based games.
Massively multiplayer online games will likely account for a large portion of the $29.4 Billion market researcher NewZoo anticipates being spent on PC games this year, which is $108.9 Billion for the total market.
