AWS claims its private managed service for 5G which is currently available for 4G LTE, is now available. However it isn't compatible with 5G at the moment.

With AWS Private 5G, which was announced in November of last year customers can choose the location they would like to establish a mobile network and the capacity of it as well as AWS will deliver and maintain the small-cell radio units servers 5G-core and RAN software, and SIM cards. The concept is to allow businesses to quickly procure and deploy their own private 5G mobile networks without having to acquire, integrate, and maintain hardware and software from several third-party vendors.

Jeff Barr, chief AWS advocate, wrote in a blog post about the new service "This cool service lets you design and deploy your own private mobile network in just a few days." But he also stated: "The private mobile network makes use of CBRS spectrum. It supports 4G LTE (Long Long Term Evolution) today and will be able to be able to support 5G in the future."

AWS Private 5G streamlines setup and deployment, so that enterprise customers can get started on private mobile networks without overinvesting IT resources.

Private mobile network deployments demand that companies spend considerable time and money to create their network to accommodate peak capacity, and also purchase and integrate software components from a variety of vendors," AWS stated. Even if an organization can get the network running, the current pricing model for private mobile networks charges per connected device. This makes it unsustainable for cases that require thousands.

Pricing for the AWS managed service is based on need and consumption, eliminating some of the overhead costs.

According to AWS the cost isn't the only barrier to creating an individual wireless network. Barr explained that CBRS spectrum in the United States also requires Certified Professional Installation (CPI) of radios. "To address these needs we are establishing an ecosystem of partners that can provide customers with radio planning, installation, CPI certification, and implementation of use cases for customers."

In terms of specifications In terms of details, the AWS Private 5G bundle includes a radio unit and 10 SIM cards. The radio unit needs AC power and wired Internet access. Basic networking (IPv4 and DHCP) is also required. Each radio can support up to 150 Mbps throughput with up to 100 SIMs.

"We are working on adding support for multiple radio units and a more SIM cards per network," Barr stated. Each radio unit is charged at $10 per hour, with at least 60 days.

Barr states that the service will use AWS Identity and Access Management to manage access to devices and applications.

AWS Private 5G has been launched in the US East Region (Ohio), US East Region (N. Virginia) and US West Regions (Oregon). AWS claims that it is working to make this service available outside of the United States in near future.

Enterprises are increasingly interested in the deployment of private 5G networks, however widespread deployment faces many obstacles, including competition from simpler and more widely accessible wireless options such as Wi-Fi 6/6E.

Some enterprise organizations may be interested in private 5G, specifically in the automotive, industrial and energy sectors. Gartner research suggests that private 5G networks are able to offer the speed and latency required for the next generation of applications, but it is still in its infancy.

Traditional IT companies for enterprise are trying to get into the market as private 5G becomes more sought-after. Cisco, HPE/Aruba and Microsoft as well as service providers like NTT, Comcast, and Verizon, offer solutions to implement private5G in enterprise settings.
