He was educated at Victoria School and later joined the Malayan Armed Forces, the predecessor of the Malaysian Armed Forces. He rose to the rank of major-general before his retirement in the 1970s. His father was Dato Syed Ahmad bin Mohammad Alsagoff (A.M. Alsagoff), a renowned philanthropist who also brought the Boy Scout movement and St. John's Ambulance brigade to Singapore and was a son of Nong Chik. When Singapore was part of Malaysia from 1963 to 1965, he was the commander of the Malaysian armed forces based in Singapore, holding the rank of brigadier. The Malaysian armed forces consist of the 4th Malaysian Infantry Brigade which has two infantry regiments of about 1000 soldiers each. The forces moved out of Singapore completely in November, 1967.
Contributions
The Alsagoff Arab School was established in 1912 upon the legacy of the last will of its founder and benefactor Syed Mohamed B Ahmed Alsagoff. Students were taught Islamic knowledge and Arabic language, as well as reading and writing in English and Malay. The institution provided education to all Muslims living in the Colony of Singapore then. At such time in Singapore’s history, only a few schools had been established and this was a rare opportunity for the Muslim community to pursuit their education. When Syed Mohamed died on 3 July 1906, he left behind a large sum of money to be used for the extension and relocation of the school. His endowment, the Syed Mohamed Ahmed Wakaf Fund, provided the land and funds needed for the development of the new madrasah premises. Once completed, it would have six classrooms to accommodate up to 200 students.
How is he remembered?
He was remembered by the Madrasah Alsagoff Al-Arabiah, or the Alsagoff Arab School, was established in 1912 upon the legacy of its founder and benefactor, Syed Mohamed bin Ahmed Alsagoff.
Role
He was the most prominent member of the family. He received two land concessions from Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor; one in Kukup where he could print his own currency and the other in Kampong Nong Chik.
He was also involved in Singapore's civil service undertaking several diplomatic posts. The first post he held was the Ottoman consul, where the Osmanieh Order inducted him into their ranks after he became consul. Syed Mohamed was also asked to conduct diplomacy on behalf of the Sultanate of Aceh during its conflict with the Dutch.
Death
