Minecraft sales have officially topped 200 million with 126 million playing the game every month. Microsoft is releasing the latest figures on sales as Mojang Studios celebrates 11 years since the initial Minecraft beta build was first released.
Microsoft has also seen a big increase in Minecraft use during the pandemic. Minecraft saw an increase of 25% in players and a 40% increase in multiplayer sessions in the last month.
The Minecraft sales reached 100 million in 2016 and the game hasn't shown any sign of slowing down. A surge in interest from YouTubers and nostalgia-induced playing resulted in Minecraft remain king of YouTube viewership stats last year.
Microsoft bought Minecraft maker Mojang six years ago for $2.5 Billion. At that time, the company had sold more than 50,000,000 copies on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Microsoft has made a smart purchase. The game's phenomenal growth in sales and the game's the game's momentum has kept players coming back for several years.
Minecraft started off life as a bedroom project, distributed initially as a Java applet on a website forum. The game quickly captured the attention of thousands of gamers who were enthralled by the idea of allowing players to shape an environment through crafting and building constructions out of blocks. It has been shared with millions of players by forming a massive community that shares Minecraft tricks and replicas of objects.
