The company posted a blog post titled "Minecraft and NFTs" and acknowledged that some developers and companies have begun to launch NFT projects that are based on Minecraft world files and skin packs. The post also suggested Minecraft creators could make use of the game as a platform to create and sell collectible NFTs that players could earn through activities performed on a Minecraft server or as a reward for actions in the real world.
"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft server and client applications, nor can they be used to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, like worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods," Mojang wrote in the post.
"We will be watching closely how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that these principles are not violated and to determine if blockchain technology will provide safer gaming experiences and other practical and inclusive gaming applications," the company stated. "We do not plan to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft right now.
The traditional game industry has begun to distance itself from NFTs over the past few months, following a backlash from gamers and a crashing crypto market. Sony announced last week that it was launching a digital collectibles feature in its new PlayStation Rewards program. However, Sony clarified emphatically that its collectibles are "definitely not NFTs." Ubisoft was the first major game publisher, to try NFTs in the fall of 2017 it ended its experiment after just four months. Valve, the Steam marketplace's owner, said in October that it would not permit any games that use NFT or blockchain technology. However, Epic Games, Fortnite creator, has recently opened doors to such products on its gaming store for PCs.
Microsoft hasn't yet given a definitive opinion on the subject with regard to its gaming properties prior to the present. However, Microsoft Gaming CEO and Xbox chief Phil Spencer said last year that he was "leery of the short-term type of panic around NFTs" and the possibility of fraud and scams as well as the pyramid scheme nature crypto market. PAXTON'S BLOG This could lead to consumers losing large amounts of money quickly. Spencer was also quoted by Axios in the fall of last year that NFTs had the potential to be exploitative and that the market was brimming with "a number of things that probably are not things you want to see in your store."
Similar sentiments are echoed in Mojang's blog article. "Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership based on exclusion and scarcity that is not in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together," the company wrote. "NFTs do not include all members of our community and create a situation of haves and have-nots.
