The Minecraft Timeline

The story of Minecraft sounds like a great film script. Notch is the main genius programmer who, beginning as an indie, revolutionized the game industry completely doing what he was passionate about. Also, he made lots of money throughout the process. And , even more when he got exhausted and decided to sell Minecraft. Perhaps a film is not necessary. It's well documented. The story is known to many people. A large part of the story was told online. Thus we have blogs, websites, forum posts, tweets and youtube videos. We don't have a timeline of the history of Minecraft (until now). And I began paying attention to Minecraft and its creator. Because it was, at the time, to be a fascinating story. One computer and one person changed the world. My personal favorite type of story! I remember being awestruck on August 20th, 2011, when Notch entered a game coding contest and livecast the whole thing. He did it often. (Mind you, this link is a condensed version of the entire thing. It lasted for 48 hours. This guy was something else! The amazing process of creating games were revealed before your eyes. It was way too fast for the whole picture however it gave an amazing understanding of what it takes to make an online game. All he needed was his computer using Java IDE Eclipse and Paint.net. The same tools he used when creating Minecraft. I later discovered, through the contest, that there are many other skilled programmers who are just like him. Not everyone strikes gold. However, many like Notch and others, aren't for this reason.

Minecraft is a unique story which is why I made one.



These are just a few of the most important things about this timeline.



- Notch began working on Minecraft just a few weeks before the start of his new job at jAlbum, which is the same software that this site is using! - Notch worked for a year working on Minecraft before he decided to quit his job. At the time, about 20.000 copies had been sold! While the game was still in the alpha stage. Promising, to say the least. The second half of 2010 was crazy, as was the first half of 2011. They founded Mojang, a company around Minecraft, hired many people, made tons of improvements to Minecraft, released a second (completely different) game, negotiated with Valve and held MineCon. In the midst of all this they sold millions of Minecraft copies! A lot of significant Minecraft things seem to have occurred on June 1 for a couple of years in consecutive years (this also happens to be Notch's birthday).



The Minecraft story isn't ending. Minecraft is still alive and breaking records. However, Notch and Minecraft were once part of the same narrative, but are now operating on separate timelines.



Whatever happens, the story of Minecraft will always be an inspiring tale and the impact it has had on the gaming and entertainment industry will be remembered for many years. It's even more special that through the marvels of Youtube we have this video from 2009.
