Boston author James Whitfield Thomson spent two years at Andre Dubus's writers' workshop before publishing his first novel, LIES YOU WANTED TO HEAR. Thomson was a Vietnam veteran and U.S. Navy navigator who earned a Ph.D. in American studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His novels include Agni and The Ledge, and his novel has received a Mass Cultural Council grant. He lives in Natick, Massachusetts.

He attended Harvard College on a scholarship and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Thomson later earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, writing a dissertation on Raymond Chandler. Thomson worked as a salesman before writing his first novel, Lies You Wanted to Hear.
