After serving in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, Thomson crafted a series of bestselling novels, including Agni. He received a grant from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts for The Ledge.

He is a former sales executive

After a career in finance, Jim Thomson decided to devote his free time to writing novels. He spent over twenty years on his debut novel, Lies You Wanted to Hear, which centers on the emotional breakdown of a marriage. A former sales executive, Thomson also served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He has published many short stories and essays, and won the Massachusetts Council for the Arts' "Best New Novel" award.

He served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam

Author James Whitfield Thomson grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and went on to attend Harvard College on a full scholarship. After his undergraduate work, he enlisted in the Navy and served in Vietnam. After returning home, he completed his Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he focused on Raymond Chandler. Thomson then became a salesman for a start-up company and wrote short stories for literary magazines. He has also won a Massachusetts Cultural Council short story contest and lives in a Victorian farmhouse west of Boston.

He is a writer

A member of Andre Dubus's writers' workshop, James Whitfield Thomson grew up on the North Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A former sales executive, Thompson served as a naval navigator in Vietnam. He also sat in the library for a year before deciding to publish his novel. Thomson spent a year looking for a publisher, and eventually settled on Sourcebooks Landmark, which has published two editions of 22,000 volumes. After submitting his manuscript to numerous publishers, Thomson finally found his publisher. Since then, his debut novel has been published by several prestigious literary journals.
