Despite the ban on gambling in Thailand, one in four of the population regularly plays the Thai lottery. The lottery is one of the country's two legal forms of gambling.
The Thai lottery has been in existence since 1874. King Chulalongkorn, who was the king at the time, gave permission for the lottery. The first lotteries were Chinese-style games. Later, in 1932, the lottery was used to raise funds for social advantages. This was also the first time that the royal Thai army department was allowed to offer the lottery.
The lottery is drawn twice a month. หวยรวยเงินล้าน takes place on the first day of the month and the second on the sixteenth day. The winner can claim the prize within two years from the date of the draw. The larger prize amounts can be cashed out at the GLO office in Nonthaburi.
Lottery tickets are sold by lottery ticket vendors. The vendors have to be at least 20 years old. These vendors reside in provinces. Generally, tickets are sold at a price of 100 baht.
In order to win, the winning lottery ticket must be presented to a lottery agent. They will write down the details on the back of the ticket. They must also present a Thai identification card and a passport. They also have to pay a tax of 0.5% to the local agent.
The Thai lottery is also available to foreigners. However, they must be at least 20 years old to win. They also have to pay 1% stamp duty on the winnings.
