Notes/Important:
1. A whole new language with the story of Macnamara- little scary to think about
2. Academic Writing-"the writing you do for school. It follows a fairly strict set of conventions, such as using standard edited English, following logical patterns of organization, and providing support for the points that you make."(Lunsford pg.539) but this is really just the basis for all writing.
4. expected to respond and in turn ask questions
6. Different cultures write differently (ex. Arabic and Spanish, and Portuguese)
7. Character Features:
5.Use standard edited english- standard spelling, grammar and punctuation. NO text lingo. No emojis. Typically no contractions. PAY ATTENTION.
Use clear and recognizable patterns of organization-9. thesis. 9. topic sentence. 10. Organization of the text (pointers(bullet points pg544-545)). 11. IMRAD. 9. Transitions. 12. Conclusion.
9. Mark logical relationships between ideas-transitions: therefore, however, or in addition
13. State claims explicitly and provide appropriate support- 14. "present claims explicitly and support them with evidence"(lundsford pg.546) -> how: Qualify your statements -> qualifying words: frequently, often, generally, sometimes or rarely (to indicate how strong your claim is ; 15. choose evidence your audience will trust -> evidence from trustworthy and persuasive (aka no wiki) ; 16. consider multiple perspectives -> "be sure to consider and acknowledge counterarguments and viewpoints other than your own" ; 17. organize information strategically -> for example or for instance , don't get off topic
18. Present your ideas as a response to others- (they say, i say)
19. Express ideas clearly and directly- you want the reader to know exactly what you are saying, you don't want your reader to ask questions referring to what you are talking about your what your viewpoint is.
20. Be aware of how genres and conventions vary across disciplines- aka remember what you are writing, those who are reading it, and the rules that go along with it (ex. lab report verses lit paper)
21. Document sources using the appropriate citation style- ex. MLA APA, etc.
