To play Minecraft 1.6 and any future updates, you will require the latest launcher. This new interface can accommodate multiple usernames within a single Mojang account, however the feature isn't currently available through Mojang itself.
The new system will automatically update, without the need for these pesky manual updates and single-player content is accessible offline. The launcher will try to connect to Minecraft servers even when players are not online.
