Cairngorms recreated in video game Minecraft

To help young people learn to manage the national park, the Cairngorms landscape has been recreated using Minecraft.
The virtual world, in which players can create anything with blocks covers all 1,700 square miles (4,402 sq km) of the park, which includes parts of Highland, Moray, Aberdeenshire and Perthshire.
The settlements were destroyed, and Cairngorms Youth Activity Team members are being asked to build new communities.
It is designed to get them thinking about the way in which planning decisions are taken.
It's reasonable to say, however, that the team does not take it seriously.

Sixteen-year-old Campbell from Aviemore claims he is building a hill fort on the top of Cairn Gorm which is one of the UK's highest mountains.

He says: "It doesn't get the temperature well, but it can get the landscape.
"We've been up the Cairngorms and have seen the corries. The Lairig Ghru is quite recognisable.
"It's as realistic as it can be. The different types of trees will tell you where you are and whether there are trees.
Ellie Moore, a fellow player, stated that "while we're trying to build things and farm , there's an endless stream of monsters or enemies that are out at night."
"So it's been a challenge to explore the world because you're constantly trying to survive, but I'd say that where you have been so far is pretty precise."
Re-creating the park was a lockdown project which Dan Harris carried out in his spare time.
He is the planning manager for Cairngorms Park Authority during the day.
He added: "They're basically dropped onto the map at the place that Aviemore ought to be, and they've been asked to form an area or community that is compatible with the goals of the national park.
"So, things they have to begin thinking about are ways to protect and enhance the natural environment as well as how they make sustainable use of resources."
