Alex: You've also been working on an unpaid Marketplace map of Summer's base.
Max Brooks: Yeah! You can see the mountain on the map after Guy and Summer have left. This was a different difficult task. I was two-thirds of the halfway through the writing of The Mountain and I sat down to play the game and the entire Nether was transformed from all the way down! However, instead of becoming angry I realized that it was probably the most important life lesson! When the world changes, you have to change along with it.
Alex Like The Island, the book is extremely thorough.
Max Brooks: Research is essential to me in all I do. I don't write that many books since I have to research for years. With something like Minecraft I live with the fear of people saying, "That would never happen!" So I played hundreds of hours playing Minecraft and made sure that the game's mechanics work in the book. There are also certain things that just happen in Minecraft that you cannot think of on your own. My character from The Island shoots his last shot at a creeper and hits a bat that is hit through. It happened to me when I was playing Minecraft!
Alex: The realness of these books is the reason they are so enjoyable.
Max Brooks: Yeah, and, with everything I write I'm hoping to establish trust with the reader. They must be able to trust me to take their trip through a place that I am familiar with, and that I serve as their tour guide.
Alex I was impressed by your insight into the smell of Minecraft smells like. It was an interesting insight Netherrack.
Max Brooks: You know, I'm very lucky to have a fantastic editor, Sarah Peed. Minecraft blog On the first book, she pushed me to think about how the Island feels like. What are the tastes of things? What is the feeling of the breeze on your face? What does the grass feel like under your feet? I want the book to be a resonant experience, so I thought that netherrack should smell sulphurous. It must smell like a stench of farts. That's right, I said it! When you drink Night Vision, it should be a bit like a carrot soda, tangy and bubbly with a slight bite on your tongue. I wanted people to feel like they were there.
