Amazon will Offer the Muscle-sensing Myo Geo Gesture Armband Available in Quarter One

Thalmic Labs announced that it will be reaching out to the masses via Amazon this quarter, one year after we first tested the Myo. The Myo's gesture-control armband, which is available for pre-order via the company’s website, will be $199. Thalmic Labs already sold over 50k pre-orders, with around half of them being delivered to customers. This is a nice endorsement of some of the applications Thalmic Labs and its partners have demonstrated.

The Myo is a set of eight muscle-sensing module that you can attach to the broadest part of your forearm. This allows the device to detect hand gestures. These gestures include stretching your hands, squeezing and waving your hands left or right, rotating your forearm, or a quick pinch with another finger (which can be used to activate or pause your Myo). On top of that there's the addition of a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a magnetometer to detect your arm motion.

There's no power button on the Myo; it wakes up when you touch it and automatically goes back to sleep if you leave it alone for a period of time. A single charge should last somewhere between 10 to 14 hours if used continuously, which is quite impressive.

Bluetooth LE is used to communicate with the Myo Connect application. This app feeds motion input back to the device or program that you control. Thalmic Labs demo room featured the Myo to control video playback as well as volume and race the sun, an addictive flight-based obstacle avoidance, game and an Orbotix Ollie rolling robotic robot. With the exception of the connectivity issue with the Ollie and the difficult nature of the game, most of these scenarios were quite straightforward for us.

We have seen Myo demos that featured PowerPoint, iTunes and Call Of Duty. Users will be able to download app "connectors" from the Myo Market to try out some of these applications, as well as for controlling Spotify, Netflix, Sonos plus popular games like Minecraft and Saints Row IV.

Thalmic Labs had impressive displays just before CES. In November, the company launched TedCas' Myo integration, which allows surgeons to manipulate medical images without touching a monitor or pointer device. The following month, Haute Technique shared its story about how it allowed Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren wear the armband to control the stage lighting during his performances. It will be interesting to see what the people behind the gesture cameras come up with, since companies are betting big on gesture control.

Update: The product page on Amazon is now up and running.
