Mojang has put its blocky feet down in the realm of brands and Minecraft. In an open letter to the community on its site, Owen Hill, the director of creative communications at the company set out new guidelines that are specifically targeted towards ad agencies, businesses, and other non-gamer organizations that want to profit from Minecraft's huge user base.
To give you an idea of the size the base of users is, Markus "Notch", Persson who was the creator of the PC version revealed in 2014 that it had more than 100 million registered users. It's understandable that having a user base that vast could be a tempting lure for brands that want to promote their completely unrelated products to the community. The new building promotion guidelines stipulate that it is no longer allowed to construct servers or maps to promote products that are not related in a playable forms. What is this? It's time to stop wasting time on awkward promotions such as the massive working cellphone CaptainSparklez created on behalf of Verizon or Disney creating an interactive map of Tomorrowland to promote its film with the same name. Mojang will allow you to do these things at your own pace and budget if a huge fan.
