North Carolina-based developer Idrees Hassan loves Minecraft so that he has recently designed a monospaced font for programming based on the typeface found in the highly acclaimed video game. The result, Monocraft, gives programmers the experience of being in Minecraft without the use of any of the game's assets.
"To be honest, I created this font as I thought it would be fun to learn how fonts worked," Hassan told Ars. "Existing Minecraft fonts were missing several small details like proper kerning , and the size of the pixels, so I figured I'd create my own. I was able to make it a 'proper programming font' after that was done. I now can write Minecraft plugins using a Minecraft font!
Hassan created the Minecraft font to be used for development purposes. He added some serifs to make letters like "i" and 'l easier to recognize, invented new programming characters, and improved the arrow characters to make it easier to read. While ligature characters blend the most well-known operational character strings "!=" into one character, they are not often popular with developers.
You can download Monocraft from GitHub for no cost (get "Monocraft.otf" on the Releases page). Monocraft is not approved by Microsoft or Mojang and is considered to be an independent fan project. As an OpenType font, it works on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Right-click the font file to install it on Windows. On the Mac Double-click the font file, then select "Install Font" in the Font Book window that appears.
Hassan previously created a faithful replica of the Minecraft font that utilizes variable spacing similar to the font in Minecraft. It is also available on GitHub.
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson originally developed the Minecraft font for an earlier game called Legend of the Chambered, around 2008. The Minecraft font has an old-fashioned pixel art style that is inspired by 16 and 8 bit console games. This was a perfect match for Notch’s lo-fi style. It's now a popular font for developers from all over the world.
